The time signature is writting after the clef and its defines us the bar. The upper number tells us how many units of time there are in each bar and the bottom number tells us what the unit of measurement is related the whole note

When there is a consistent division of the beat into two equal parts, the meter is known as simple meter.

When there is a consistent division of the beat into three parts, the meter is known as compound meter.
